United States Invests US$ 17 Million to Digitalise Colombo Port Operations
The United States has announced a US$ 17 million investment to digitalise operations at the Port of Colombo, targeting the development of a Maritime Single Window and a Port Community System. The initiative, announced by the US Embassy in Colombo, will enable shipping companies, Sri Lanka Customs, immigration authorities, port operators, and businesses to share information electronically on a unified platform — replacing existing paper-based processes that contribute to clearance delays and operational inefficiencies.
US Ambassador Eric Meyer stated that the investment would strengthen supply chains that both economies depend on, noting that the port handles an estimated US$ 30 billion in US-related cargo and more than half a million containers of American inbound and outbound freight annually. Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Anura Karunathilaka emphasised that Colombo’s future as a regional hub depends on modernising operations rather than merely expanding infrastructure. SLPA Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake added that the new digital systems will reduce unnecessary delays and deliver more predictable services for shipping lines and their customers. An implementing partner will be selected through an open, competitive procurement process.
