  • Colombo West International Terminal Doubles Capacity to 3.2 Million TEUs with US$ 750 Million Phase II Launch

The Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT), operated under a 35-year BOT concession by APSEZ, John Keells Holdings, and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, has officially doubled its annual handling capacity from 1.6 million to 3.2 million TEUs following the completion of its US$ 750 million Phase II expansion. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya inaugurated the expanded facility, which positions CWIT to handle nearly 25% of Colombo Port’s 13 million TEU target by 2028.

CWIT — Sri Lanka’s first fully automated deep-water container terminal — achieved the milestone of 1 million TEUs in its inaugural year of operations and crossed 2 million TEUs within 18 months. The expanded terminal can now simultaneously berth three ultra-large container vessels. With fully electrified operations, zero tailpipe emissions, and over 17 million safe working hours logged, CWIT has generated more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of Colombo’s bid to emerge as a leading Indian Ocean transshipment hub.
