US-Sri Lanka Maritime Security Partnership Deepens with Commissioning of SLNS Samudravijaya in Colombo

Sri Lanka’s regional maritime surveillance capabilities have received a major upgrade. Following an expansive 12,000-nautical-mile voyage from Baltimore that included the Navy’s first-ever transit of the Panama Canal, the newly inducted SLNS Samudravijaya (a former U.S. Coast Guard Cutter) has been officially commissioned into active service by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Eastern Terminal of the Port of Colombo.

For the commercial shipping and logistics sector, enhanced naval security directly translates to safer, more stable merchant trade paths across the Indian Ocean.
