  • SLPA Convenes Emergency Meeting as Middle East Crisis Scales Up

As military tensions in the Middle East escalate, Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake convened a high-level emergency meeting this week with terminal operators and global shipping lines. The goal is to ensure the Port of Colombo remains a resilient “Safe Harbor” despite the volatility in the Gulf. With major carriers like MSC, Maersk, and Hapag-Lloyd present, the discussion focused on managing the sudden influx of rerouted cargo and maintaining 24/7 operational fluidity.

Dr. Dissanayake emphasized that Colombo’s “Operational Maturity” is currently being tested by a surge in transshipment volumes as vessels avoid high-risk zones. The SLPA is coordinating with the Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) and South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) to prioritize berthing for mainline vessels, ensuring that Sri Lanka’s position as a regional relay hub is protected during this systemic global disruption.
