Japanese shipping company NYK has welcomed its third liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) into the port of Hiroshima. Named Jasmine Leader after the jasmine flower, the vessel is the first of four to be delivered from China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. The ship will transport finished vehicles produced by Mazda, and seeks to meet customer demands for lower environmental impact in logistics. NYK plans to take delivery of a total of 20 new LNG-fuelled PCTCs by 2028 under its Sail GREEN brand, as part of its long-term target of net-zero emissions of greenhouse gas by 2050. The company aims to launch zero-emission ships that run on low-environmental-load marine fuels such as hydrogen or ammonia in the future. NYK is positioning LNG as a low-carbon marine fuel bridge-solution until future zero-emission ships become a reality. The vessel received LNG fuel from Kaguya, an LNG-bunkering ship operated by Central LNG Marine Fuel Japan Corporation, a joint venture owned by NYK and other companies. A commemoration ceremony attended by related parties of Mazda and NYK was held to celebrate the vessel’s entrance into Hiroshima port.
