Maersk Implements Peak Season Surcharge for Sri Lanka Routes
Global carrier Maersk has announced the implementation of a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for shipments from Asia-Pacific (APA) to South-East India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, effective February 25, 2026. This surcharge is a response to the “Modern Canvas” of fluctuating demand and operational costs as we head into the post-Lunar New Year recovery phase. For Sri Lankan importers, this adds a new layer of cost to the supply chain during a period when inventory replenishment is critical.
The PSS reflects the ongoing recalibration of shipping networks in the Indian Ocean. As carriers manage vessel rotations and equipment availability, these surcharges serve as a “safety valve” to maintain service continuity. For the “Towering Tree” of the Sri Lankan logistics sector, this move highlights the need for precise freight budgeting and early space bookings. While these surcharges are a seasonal standard, their timing this year underscores the volatility that remains a feature of the 2026 trade landscape.
