Modern Cranes, Maritime Gains: SAGT Secures $20M for Modernization
The South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT), a key private operator at the Port of Colombo, has secured a $20 million financing package from the International Finance Corporation (IFC). This funding is earmarked for a critical “Modern Canvas” project: the replacement of aging ship-to-shore (STS) cranes with modern, energy-efficient models. This investment comes at a time when regional competition—particularly from rapidly expanding Indian ports—is putting pressure on Sri Lanka to maintain its technological edge.
This modernization drive is about more than just speed; it is about sustainability. The new cranes are expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions per TEU handled, aligning Colombo with global shipping’s “Green Corridors.” For Sri Lanka’s export-import trade, more efficient cranes mean faster vessel turnaround times and higher terminal productivity. As the “Towering Tree” of the economy seeks to recover, these targeted infrastructure upgrades ensure that the maritime sector remains the primary engine for foreign exchange earnings and regional relevance.
