  • Colombo Port City Transitions to Operational Hub as 2026 Trade Commences

On this second day of 2026, the Colombo Port City stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s long-term infrastructure ambition, officially transitioning from a construction-heavy phase into a fully operational commercial zone. Following the successful commissioning of integrated utility grids in late 2025, the zone now hosts 146 registered enterprises across financial services, IT, and logistics. This milestone is a critical part of Sri Lanka’s strategy to diversify its export portfolio away from traditional goods toward modern service exports, providing a “Modern Canvas” for regional investment.

The timing is significant; while global merchandise trade is forecast by the WTO to grow at a cautious 1.8% in 2026, the Port City’s status as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) offers a buffer against global tariff volatility. Simultaneously, the Colombo East Container Terminal (CECT) has moved toward full operational readiness, allowing the port to handle ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) with improved efficiency. However, the global energy market remains a variable; oil prices opened the year marginally higher as investors weigh new U.S. sanctions on “shadow fleet” tankers against the upcoming OPEC+ meeting on January 4. For the Sri Lankan logistics sector, the start of 2026 represents a pivotal “balancing act”—capitalizing on record-breaking port throughput while navigating the rising costs of fuel and the shifting geopolitical landscape of the Indian Ocean.
