Colombo Port Shatters Records with 8.2 Million TEU Milestone in 2025
As the sun sets on 2025, the Port of Colombo has officially solidified its status as the “Towering Tree” of South Asian maritime trade, recording a historic throughput of 8.2 million TEUs. This achievement represents a robust 7.1% year-on-year growth, a feat driven by a unique combination of surging transshipment volumes and a significant 13.9% increase in domestic container activity. While the port has long been a transshipment giant—accounting for 80% of its total operations—2025 was the year the local economy’s import-export trade began to exert its own influence on the global stage.
The successful operationalization of the West Container Terminal (WCT), backed by India’s Adani Group, provided the critical capacity relief the port required to maintain its competitive edge during the Red Sea rerouting crises earlier in the year. Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Sirimewan Ranasinghe noted that the port effectively doubled its perceived capacity limits, paving the way for the even more ambitious 15 million TEU target by late 2026. For regional freight forwarders, this growth translates into improved berthing schedules and reduced dwell times, making Colombo not just a transit point, but a reliable pillar of stability in an otherwise volatile global network.
