  • Colombo Port expected record 8.2mn boxes 2025

Colombo Port is projected to handle a record 8.2 million TEUs in 2025, an increase from the 7.78 million TEUs processed last year, according to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman, Sirimewan Ranasinghe. This accelerated growth is largely due to the new West Container Terminal (WCT), backed by India’s Adani Group, which saw a rapid increase in operations after starting earlier this year. The port, a critical transshipment hub for South Asia, is also benefiting from shipping reroutes via the Cape of Good Hope, which boosted 2024 transshipment volumes by nearly 10% after recovering from the 2022 economic crisis dip. The SLPA expects the port’s overall capacity to reach 15 million TEUs by 2026.
