  • German Ports Mandate Digital System for Container Release Security

A new law took effect in German ports, mandating a digital ‘Secure Release Order’ process for full import containers at Hamburg and Bremerhaven, effective October 1, 2025. This critical security upgrade replaces the old, vulnerable PIN-based release system with a new digital authorization that ensures only one traceable party is authorized to pick up cargo. The goal is to enhance security and combat fraud across the supply chain.

This transition to a PIN-free, digital process has significant implications for landside logistics. While Maersk provided a two-week “soft launch” period, the mandatory shift on October 15 requires all customers and vendors to be registered on the “German Ports” platform to obtain a release. Failure to comply means containers cannot be released for onward inland journeys.

This initiative is part of a broader European trend toward digitalizing port operations to build safer, more efficient supply chains. For freight forwarders and truckers, it requires immediate system updates and compliance training. The adoption of this digital framework is essential for maintaining smooth operations through one of Europe’s busiest maritime gateways.
