  • Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd Announce New Freight Rate Hikes

Two of the world’s largest shipping companies, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, have announced significant rate increases for key trade lanes, effective in September. Hapag-Lloyd is implementing a General Rate Increase (GRI) of USD 500 per container on all shipments from Far East ports to the East Coast of South America. Maersk has also introduced a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) of USD 700 per container for cargo moving from Asia to North America.

These rate hikes reflect the shipping industry’s response to rising operational costs, including increased fuel prices and a complex market environment driven by ongoing Red Sea diversions and new U.S. tariffs. While the surcharges are intended to manage costs and maintain service quality during the traditional peak season, they add to the financial pressure on businesses that are already navigating a turbulent global market.

For importers and exporters, this means higher transportation expenses, which could lead to increased prices for consumers. Companies may need to re-evaluate their logistics strategies, negotiate with carriers, or explore alternative routes to mitigate the impact. The announcements serve as a clear signal that the cost of global shipping remains highly sensitive to geopolitical and economic factors.
