  • M&S Announces £340m Investment in Advanced Food Distribution

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has committed a landmark investment of £340 million to transform its food supply chain with a new automated distribution center in Northamptonshire. This state-of-the-art facility is a cornerstone of M&S’s growth strategy, designed to revolutionize how products move from suppliers to store shelves. By integrating cutting-edge robotics, AI, and data-driven logistics, the company aims to significantly boost operational efficiency, reduce waste, and ensure fresher products reach consumers more quickly.

The new 1.3 million-square-foot facility, set to open in 2029, will feature advanced technologies, including an automated pallet crane and a high-speed shuttle system for sorting. These systems will streamline operations, allowing M&S to restock efficiently and improve product availability. The project also has a significant focus on sustainability, with plans to achieve a BREEAM outstanding rating through the use of responsibly sourced materials, rooftop solar panels, and rainwater harvesting.

In addition to the technological advancements, the project is expected to create over 2,000 jobs during the construction phase and 1,000 permanent positions upon completion. This investment not only future-proofs M&S’s business but also sets a new benchmark for sustainable and resilient logistics in the UK retail sector
