  • Ports Prioritize Decarbonization with New Green Initiatives

Ports and shipping companies worldwide are making significant progress in their decarbonisation efforts. A key highlight in May 2025 was the conclusion of the European SEANERGY project, which provided ports with comprehensive tools and a catalogue of over 90 sustainable technologies to accelerate their energy transition. These resources offer structured guidance for ports looking to implement green practices, from ship power solutions to alternative fuels.

In parallel with these initiatives, companies are also launching their own green projects. For example, CMA CGM launched Vietnam’s first fully electric container barge, marking a landmark in sustainable maritime transport. Similarly, the Port of Rotterdam Authority has introduced a fully electric hydrofoil patrol vessel as part of its decarbonisation pilot program. These projects demonstrate a growing commitment across the industry to reduce its environmental footprint.

The move towards a more sustainable maritime sector is also being driven by new regulations like FuelEU Maritime, which sets clear standards for fuel use. By adopting eco-friendly technologies and practices, ports are not only complying with new rules but also positioning themselves as leaders in the global push for a more sustainable supply chain.
